I get tears in my eyes just thinking about if Edgar Allan or Poe ever went missing. These are my children. I would be lost without them. Microchipping has helped to reunite many lost animals with their owners. A microchip has a unique number on it that can be located and read by a scanner. This number is registered with the current owners contact information and address. It’s comforting to know that Edgar Allan is microchipped. Poe was not microchipped when I adopted him from the MDSPCA almost 7 years ago. At that point, they still used tattoo identification.
Poe is strictly an indoor cat, but as time went by I felt that I really should have him microchipped. Although, he does not go outside, it just gives me more peace of mind. I finally had him microchipped a few weeks ago. Thanks to a post I saw on GenerationWags, I was able to have Poe microchipped for only $10.00! I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Microchipping costs vary, but are always reasonable and well worth it. Many shelters with wellness centers provide the service for very little.
I was a bit nervous about the procedure. Poe is a little over 7 years old now. Technically, he is a senior now. I’m in denial about that. I wasn’t sure how he would handle the procedure. We scheduled an appointment with Cat Sense Feline Hospital. Lynn the receptionist was kind enough to squeeze us in. I believe it was the last day for the “special”. I automatically felt very good about my decision to have Poe microchipped. The staff was very warm and welcoming.
We were escorted to a comfy exam room. These people loved cats obviously. After a few minutes, Dr. Tuzo and her lovely vet technician arrived. I told them I was excited, but a bit nervous. I was concerned it would painful for Poe. They reassured me that it would be a very fast and simple procedure. Wow, were they right!
After allowing Poe to calmly exit his carrier on his own terms, Dr. Tuzo prepped Poe. Basically petting him and finding the location to place the microchipped. Luckily Poe is a very tolerant and friendly cat. Within the blink of an eye Poe was microchipped! He didn’t even flinch! The injection of the chip was simple and seemingly painless for Poe. The microchip itself is basically the size of grain of rice. Dr. Tuzo then showed me how they scan the microchips! I have to say it is a really comforting feeling knowing Poe is microchipped now.
Once I received an email that the vet had registered Poe’s microchip, I logged onto the website to make sure all of my information was current and accurate. It is crucial to keep your profile information up to date. I have always been an advocate for microchipping pets. After experiencing the procedure first hand, I’m able to let people know it’s quick and easy. A few seconds and a little pinch for Poe are worth knowing if we are ever separated, that we can be reunited again.
Take the challenge to love your pets, make sure to use current tags on their collars, and have them microchipped! Check out the challenge at Love Tag Chip Challenge.
