When a lost pet gets reunited with their owner there is elation! However in some cases, it is just the beginning of a new set of obstacles. Such is the case of Mack the basset hound who was lost in the desert six months ago following a car accident, a circumstance that is not so unusual when it comes to lost pets and serves as an important reminder of why it’s vital to have your pet microchipped and tagged.
As reported by a friend of Mack’s owner Dylan:
“His owner, Dylan, searched for weeks and never gave up hope of finding Mack again, even though he feared the worst.”
Color flyers were posted extensively in the area around where the accident occurred and a lost pet report posted on HeLPingLostPets via Lost Dogs Arizona FB page.
We are told that part of Dylan’s efforts to find Mack also included setting his home page as the PACC intake page, as he continued to hope for his miracle reunion.
His friend goes on to say,
“Then, just a few days ago, Marana police found a stray basset hound in a Marana drainage ditch and turned over the pup to Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) where its microchip was scanned and identity quickly revealed. After months and months of false hope and fruitless searching, ‘Miracle Mack’ was soon reunited with his owner, safe, loved, and happy to be home again.
But even though finding Mack was a kind of miracle, the story is not yet over. Mack was recovered with unhealed injuries, including a fractured pelvis and an out of socket patella. His owner does not have the funds needed to cover Mack’s extensive vet care needs.”
On April 19, just a few days before he received the call that Mack had been found, and a week before the six months missing mark, Dylan posted a photo on Facebook of happier times, wishing his missing dog well, not knowing that in a few days Mack would be back in his arms.

Now Dylan’s hope has turned to Mack’s recovery from his injuries. Since they’ve been reunited, Dylan has not left Mack’s side, but a friend shares:
“This has been an amazing whirlwind finding Mack alive, he is injured and we have been diligently working with the vet on a game plan to fix his badly fractured pelvis and damaged legs. The thing that makes it especially tricky is the patella issue is on one leg, and the out of socket hip with fractured pelvis is on the other side, so two surgeries may be required.”
“Presurgical blood work and diagnostics have been done, and we are waiting on Orthopedic consult results. It’s a tricky medical case- but Mack is a happy boy.”
