Mr. Moe’s Miraculous Thanksgiving Reunion

The Monday before Thanksgiving, Peg Barbarite and her family, like so many, were looking ahead to spending time with family and their two beagles Pippa and Tugger.  Little did they know what the “microchip universe” had in store for them!

In 2003 Moe was adopted from SOS Beagles.   The rescue’s Tennessee operation had pulled him from a shelter setting where he had come in as a stray and transported him to their New Jersey Chapter.  And so just two months later, little one year old Moe was adopted to a loving New Jersey family.

For the next eight years Moe lived happily with his family with two young kids and fur siblings.

In February of 2011, Moe had just had minor surgery and had been wearing a cone, so his invisible fence collar had been removed.   A sleet storm, usually a deterrent to Moe venturing outside, created a relaxed situation for the family, until they suddenly noticed that he HAD in fact ventured out. Without his invisible fence collar on, he was nowhere to be found.   Realizing that he was missing resulted in the family’s heartbreak as they searched area shelters and posted flyers in search of Moe.

Fast forward to the Monday before Thanksgiving 2016.

Linda Forrest, Director of SOS Beagles had received a call at 3 am but was only able to learn the nature of the call through a message as she missed the call.  An animal control officer had picked up a stray beagle on the side of the road in Hazlet, about an hour away from his adoptive home.

After being unable to connect with the owner due to an outdated phone and address, Linda was contacted since her rescue initially registered the chip.   The officer indicated she was taking it into the Monmouth County SPCA.

Linda researched her microchip records and quickly reached out to the adopter Peg to give her the amazing news that “Mr. Moe” seemed to have been found and now at the Monmouth County SPCA location in Eatontown.  Fortunately, Linda had Peg’s email through a more recent adoption making the connection.   At the same time, Peg’s father-in-law, whose number was also listed with the microchip company had contacted her husband, so Peg had been alerted to this fantastic news by the time she opened her email from Linda.

Peg didn’t waste anytime rushing over to the SPCA to see her long lost and beloved beagle.

While the usual stray hold at the shelter is 7 days (although Peg was the microchipped owner on record), Peg asked to take him home, instead of keeping him in the Shelter, until either the 7 days were up and he was cleared to be theirs again, or someone else claimed him which did not occur.

Happily Home!

You could not have asked for a more picture perfect Thanksgiving for Moe, back home with his family and his new fur siblings.

 Moe waiting for a treat.

It hasn’t taken long for him to reacquaint himself with the home, despite some renovations, and his doggie door.

We could not be more thrilled for the Barbarite family to have their “Mr. Moe” back home, now at the ripe old age of 14, but clearly with lots of zestm spirit and love to share with mom, dad, his now older human siblings and two fur siblings, Pippa and Tugger.

Hard to believe that things seem so back to normal for this happy beagle trio out for a post Thanksgiving walk.

Below is the tear jerking reunion video of dad’s reunion with Moe as shared on
Harlingen Veterinary Clinic‘s fb page (the Barbarite family vet).

Good times back home!

Thank you to Peg for sharing these pictures and videos with us.  She is hopeful that this story will help inspire others to make sure their pets are microchipped!

Thank you to animal control and the Monmouth County SPCA for picking Moe up as a stray and bringing him to safety and his eventual reunion.

And a huge thanks to Linda at SOS Beagle Rescue for connecting Moe and his family to begin with, making sure he was microchipped and registered at the time of adoption, and so quickly reaching out to Moe’s owners!

As a side note, the date that Moe was found ironically was the same date six years ago that Moe’s fur sibling passed away.   This did not go unnoticed by Peg.  Perhaps it was more than just the “microchip universe” in action helping to bring Moe home : )

Thanksgiving 2016 will surely be a holiday celebration to remember in the Barbarite household!

MOEral to the story:

Remember to microchip, register, and keep your contact info updated!
Back up info is also an extra protection to make sure your beloved pet
can find their way home should they get separated from you.

Even if your pet has gone missing and it’s been some time, you might one day get that miracle call!
