This story of a lost cat found due to a microchip has an additional story of love to share!
Sonya’s owner posted this in July 2015 on Lost and Found Pets of Ontario, along with utilizing every tool they knew of to get the word out.
HAMILTON, ON :: MISSING :: SONYA
July 24, 2015 :: YOUNG SPAYED FEMALE
“She is a very shy cat. We expect she would be minimally combative if you try to catch her. She may be tempted by tuna or treats. Sonya used to be a feral cat but for the last 4 years she lived at home as an exclusively indoor cat.”
HAPPY NEWS FROM THE OWNER:
“Sonya approached a lovely couple in our neighborhood just next street 5 months ago. Being a colony cat initially, she survived somehow on her own for a whole year feeding on birds and small rodents. This kind family has been feeding her and treated as their own pet, gradually getting closer to her.
Now, when she would allow to pick her up, they brought her to a vet for vaccinations (it was her initial vet by the way) and it was found out she was micro-chipped and we were called.
The family already got used to our Sonya and they wanted to keep her. We agreed to leave Sonya with them because it would be better for her. She will be a single cat in their loving household and we have 2 other cats and one of them used to bully Sonya. We are so happy she is alive and happy even not with us!”
Sonya’s story provides many “lessons learned”:
- Sonya was microchipped and registered
- Sonya’s owners did all they could to get the word out to find her.
- The people who befriended Sonya took it upon themselves to keep her fed and work towards befriending her to ultimately allow her for them to handle.
- The people finding her took her to a vet where here microchip was discovered.
- Sonya’s former owners found it in their hearts to allow Sonya to remain with the finders given how much they had come to love her. (We realize that not every lost pet owner would be able to part with their beloved pet when found. In this case it was a win all around).
While Sonya’s story ended happily so many pet owners still await word about their missing pet!
One cat owner, also in Canada, views Sonya’s story as one to keep her hope alive for her missing cat Whiskers.
We hope you will share this blog post to give hope to others and also exposure for Whisker’s mom who hopes Sonya’s story might be Whisker’s sometime soon!
Here’s Whisker’s story as shared on HeLPingLostPets FB page.
Lost Cat Whiskers :: Domestic Short Hair
Mississauga, ON, Canada L5C 2N7 on May 04, 2016
Meet Whiskers. She was rescued (with her mom and 5 siblings) by Neveah’s Charity of West Lincoln from Hamilton Animal Services. Whiskers was then adopted by a wonderful family in Mississauga.
Whiskers slipped out of the house on May 4, 2016 and the past month has been spent trying to find her. An anonymous tip that someone picked her up seems very likely.
One month later her family is searching and worrying every day. Whiskers is microchipped and there have been many flyers put up in the area. Plus calls every day to Animal Services.
If your pet is found, the actions of the finder determine if you will get your pet home. Will they look for you? Will they get your pet scanned? Will they contact the local shelter?
To everyone that finds a pet, please don’t assume that pet does not have a home. Most do. And getting that pet home is your responsibly.
