Jeremy from Mississippi got Koda the Siberian Husky at just 6 weeks old. Clearly this guy was a strikingly handsome pup! Along with his good looks, Koda came to Jeremy with a registered AKC microchip, an invisible benefit that Jeremy would come to fully appreciate within the year!
Jeremy lived in a gated community at the time, and with a fenced in yard, Koda was given the freedom to enjoy the outside at times when Jeremy was away from home.
Despite the perceived safety of his environment, Jeremy sadly learned that no matter where you are or how safe you feel your pet may be, there are those who sadly will take any opportunity to steal them for their own purpose.
Then one day, at just around one year old, Koda was stolen from his yard. One can only surmise the reasoning, but it could include someone who saw this striking purebred Husky as a “money making” commodity. We will never know for sure.
Jeremy made extensive efforts to contact all area shelters, vet offices, and utilize social media and his community’s listserv, but did not receive one lead about the whereabouts of Koda.
Years passed, but the memory of Koda never did. Jeremy’s then girlfriend Laura became his wife, and a rescue named “Foxy” came into their home and renamed “Roxy”!
Then recently and seven years after Koda was stolen, Jeremy received a startling call from Young-Williams Animal Center (YWAC) in Knoxville.
But apparently Jeremy was not the FIRST person contacted about what had been a stray that came into their facility. A first microchip that was detected led them to call the person who had registered the microchip. Surprisingly the person they called said they didn’t want him and had surrendered him previously to a shelter!
This was a shocking turn of events for sure! Young-Williams then began to prepare the stray for adoption.
As the dog underwent a thorough medical check out, an x-ray revealed another microchip that had migrated to his shoulder. This second chip was scanned and the registered owner of THIS microchip was contacted. Yes, it was Jeremy!
During his medical review, Koda was determined to be heartworm positive. Jeremy states, “we were very thankful that they offered to provide treatment through their Compassion Fund”.
Based on Jeremy’s seven hour drive to Knoxville, and Koda’s need to start heartworm treatment, plans were made for Jeremy to drive the next week to pick him up.
Koda’s heartworm treatment will be continued, but he’s on his way back to health and, most importantly, back in the arms of his family.
