Facebook Microchip Reunion Tales!

The world of Facebook has opened up tremendous resources for lost and found pets to be posted.

Sometimes the posts appear on local Lost & Found FB pages.  Area animal control FB pages will post found strays.  Often the owner of a missing pet will create a lost pet FB page specific to their pet in hopes of gaining exposure.

A powerful network developed by Lost Dogs of America provides State-wide pages, offering an expansive reach! Many of them are working in concert with HeLPing Lost Pets, a free integrated map-based database for lost and found pets, which even provides for pet sightings.

While so many people volunteer tirelessly to get the word out and find a “match” of lost and found pets, microchips remain a vital “tool” in ultimately reuniting lost pets.  Yet their success also relies on found pets being reported as found and brought to a facility to be scanned for a microchip!

Below are two recent stories from FB where the pet was taken to a vet or shelter where a microchip scan was performed and found!

REUNITED!

This beauty, found in Durham on 7/11, is back home safe with family!

What worked: MICROCHIP!

“REUNITED!! Owners found and this beauty has been reunited with his elated owners! Thank you to everyone for their help and caring!”
“When we took the dog to the vet they scanned him for a microchip. The information did not come up even though he was chipped. When we took him to the Humane Society they worked with the rescue to read the chip and get him back to his elated owner! Bless you all for this most wonderful effort where we can post our lost and found babies! XO”

Today this little female shih tzu was brought in by someone who found her. The young dog was scanned and a microchip was found. We contacted owner and discovered that Gabby has been missing for 3 months. They had nearly lost hope. Gabby will be spayed on Monday and goes home to her happy family on Tuesday!

As noted in the story above, sometimes tracking back a microchip is not straight forward, often based on registration info.
